Project: ADSS Fibre Optic Cable Systems Test

Fibre optic cable testing We were contracted to carry out a series of load tests to determine the ADSS Fibre Optic Cable breaking strain and Give Link's assembly breaking strain.

A full range of load tests were documented that allowed for the design of a Cable Break away system with the potential for a single or double strike and break which could be fitted over railway lines, main roads or high risk agricultural pathways.

By testing all the individual components, we were able to build a profile of the best application for the safe system for accidental strikes to the AFL/ADSS cables.

The test bed was designed based on the lifting equipment safety factors and minimum deflection within the steel work for thorough readings.

This included the use of high accuracy load cells and a set of vice points which collected data to accurately read the maximum force exerted on the cable and the flexing of the cable during the tests.

  • Finite Element Analysis of each plant item was carried out to ensure long term stability
  • Proof load testing was carried out to match analysis requirements
  • Certification of the Give Link, as proof of conformance and batch testing

The tests carried out and all data was collected and analysed before being compiled into a presentation folder for further consideration and analysis by the client.

Project: Ships Coal Weighing System Structural Analysis

Structural Analysis LHS Services were contracted to carry out a structural analysis of existing coal feeder supporting structures as part of an overall project to determine the possibility of extra loadings being applied by new equipment being proposed to increase efficiencies and upgrade safety.

  1. Site visits were conducted to review the complexity of the tasks and analyse the equipment requirements with other parties involved in the project
  2. The requirements included the standards and legal (Statutory) documentation to be implemented as part of the design project
  3. On site works included accurate measurements and photographs of the external and internal structures
  4. CAD drawings of the proposed weighing system were superimposed on scaled building drawings to demonstrate the systems to other parties involved in the project
  5. A complete set of structural calculations were provided in accordance with the drawings specifications
  6. Other calculations included static and dynamic loading of the high speed machines and their effect on the existing over water structures
  7. Finalised CAD drawings, calculations and legal requirements were produced for agreement by all parties before the project was considered for approval

Project: Northern Ireland, Scotland HVDC 250 MW Interconnector cable testing.

We were contracted to design and manufacture a test system that could analyse a specific repair that would be used underwater at 26.5 metres below sea level.Interconnector cable testing.

  • The test programme provided detailed information from a number of high accuracy load and displacement sensors with readings take every second.
  • The interconnector power cable was subjected to a number of tests including readings being taken while the cable was rotated through various angles while high tension power supply was passed through the cable.
  • The test bed was designed based on the lifting equipment safety factors and minimum deflection within the steelwork for thorough readings of the cable as it was put through a series of load tests.
  • This included the use of high accuracy (+or-o.o1%) load and displacement sensors and a set of vice points which collected data to accurately read the maximum force exerted on the cable and the flexing of the cable during the tests.

  • On completion co all the load tests all data was collected and analysed before being compiled into a presentation folder showing performance graphs etc.

Project: Specialised Consultancy on Lifting Equipment for Hydro Stations

Preamble: Review the technical ability and current performance of all the Crane Systems and Dam Beam Lifting equipment and make comment on any aspect that required upgrading, complete overhaul or replacement of part or complete systems and make recommendations accordingly.

  • The review covered all Hydro Stations in the Republic of Ireland and the project took a number of weeks.
  • The review covered the assessment of the equipment under the Electrical and Mechanical engineering, Safety, Standards and Legal requirements (SI299).
  • A technical document was devised that mirrored each lifting system and data collected that would be tabulated and analysed for the individual site technical file.
  • Comparisons of issues on a site by site basis were made and a final report was produced showing the strengths and weaknesses of each Crane Systems and Dam Beam Lifting equipment.
  • We indicated by using a pass or fail tick box whether or not the cranes/lifting systems would pass a thorough examination and be certified in accordance with the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) regulations 2007
  • The overall report analysed all the data and produced recommendations including all details for a tender document for the refurbishment and replacement of equipment.
